چکیده

L-moment ratio diagrams are increasingly being used in the literature for selecting a probability distribution function for regional frequency analysis. Two graphical methods are often used in the distribution selection process, the sample average and a line of best-fit through the sample L-moment ratios. Examples of homogeneous and heterogeneous regional samples are simulated to illustrate the utility of the two distribution selection methods. Distribution selection for homogeneous regional data is best based on the sample average and not on a line of best-fit through the data points. For very heterogeneous regional data, exhibiting a large range in the distributions shape parameter, the line of best-fit is useful for distribution selection. These results emphasize the importance of using heterogeneity tests m conjunction with L-moment ratio diagrams.

Assessment of Goodness of Fit Methods in Determining the Best Regional Probability Distribution of Rainfall Data

One of the most important problems in time series analysis of stream flow and rainfall data in an area is selecting the best probability distribution. Since the rainfall stations are associated and correlated with each other, so statistical analysis of the station data seamlessly are very important. Therefore, the first step in data analysis, is selecting the prevailing probability distribution...

Flood Flow Frequency Model Selection Using L-moment Method in Arid and Semi Arid Regions of Iran

Statistical frequency analysis is the most common procedure for the analysis of flood data at a gauged location thatin first step it is needed to select a model to represent the population. Among them, the central moment has been themost common and widely used, and with the using of computers, the application of the maximum likelihood hasincreased. This research was carried out in order to reco...

Comparison of Artificial Neural Network, Decision Tree and Bayesian Network Models in Regional Flood Frequency Analysis using L-moments and Maximum Likelihood Methods in Karkheh and Karun Watersheds

Proper flood discharge forecasting is significant for the design of hydraulic structures, reducing the risk of failure, and minimizing downstream environmental damage. The objective of this study was to investigate the application of machine learning methods in Regional Flood Frequency Analysis (RFFA). To achieve this goal, 18 physiographic, climatic, lithological, and land use parameters were ...

Evaluation of estimation methods for parameters of the probability functions in tree diameter distribution modeling

One of the most commonly used statistical models for characterizing the variations of tree diameter at breast height is Weibull distribution. The usual approach for estimating parameters of a statistical model is the maximum likelihood estimation (likelihood method). Usually, this works based on iterative algorithms such as Newton-Raphson. However, the efficiency of the likelihood method is not...

Moment-Ratio Diagrams for Univariate Distributions

We present two moment-ratio diagrams along with guidance for their interpretation. The first momentratio diagram is a graph of skewness versus kurtosis for common univariate probability distributions. The second moment-ratio diagram is a graph of coefficient of variation versus skewness for common univariate probability distributions. Both of these diagrams, to our knowledge, are the most compr...
